spring!!!!!!

happy first day of spring for tomorrow!! yay for warmth and blue skys! ive been spending lots of time out in the garden, reading up on companion planting, permaculture and organic. here are some pics of my plants on a sunny almost spring day

onions near carrots are said to improve the carrots flavour

the peas are looking great and growing quickly. cucumbers with a question mark as they have been pretty badly trampled, i think ill have to start some more in a less trafficed area. The kids are pretty good about remembering paths and being gentle with plants (they like to gently stroke their new seedlings as normal people would an animal lol) they are all great little gardeners but at exciting times aka food time its just 'push everyone out the way and take the quickest root!'

here are some of the plants ive been potting ready for the big move at the end of the year. im sooooo excited about cherries, we went to get barrels for my existing trees and a spoted a cherry tree. i thought, what the hell, whats one more giant tub off heaviness to move all the way to pt wakefield. i wont apreciate it when i have to shift it but i sure will when i have my very own cherries

more future yummies, and also some aloe vera plants. i got them at a garage sale, $2, SOOO worth it already for its use on bites, dry skin etc

i am sooooo excited because LIL IS COMING OVER ON FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its gona be a weekend full of fun (and im sure ice cream cake, cookie dough but perhaps not watermellon at this time of the year? these are some of our favourite foods)
the only thing that could make me any more excited would be if it was going to be warm enough to go swimming

meet our new friends

ive had a great day off work, reading books in a sunny spot in the garden, eating yummy snacks and gossiping with kylie and getting to know the new birdies meet boots (because she has huge eyes like puss in boots), henri (because kylie says a girl chicken can have a boy name) and pennie (because it sounds like a chickeny kind of name)

i got them from the neighbours this morning. they are so friendly and curious, they peck food straight out of my hand and dont mind a good pat. henri is laying age and the other two will be in the next few weeks. apparently they usually dont lay eggs for a few weeks after theyve been moved but....

henri suprised me with a perfect little egg this afternoon. i guess she likes her new home!

i was happy to collect the egg which was still warm in my hand.

theyve had a bit of a forrige in the garden and got stuck into some weeds for me (i wasnt complaining until they discoverd the veggie patch)

guess what im getting?

chickens! for a long time ive wanted to get chickens to be part of my sustainable life goal, for their eggs, manure, bug eating etc but put it in the 'one day' basket. the lady next door has recently got chickens which prompted me to look into chichen housing on the internet and ive come across plent of small portable homes, which are far more practical for me at the moment than the big permanent concrete chook shed that i had envisioned.

i found a few different companies that sell chook 'tractors' but decided on a small buisiness in sydney run by a guy who knocks up 'eco coops' out of recycled materials where possible, including old pram wheels and marine ply from old kitchen cupboard doors(http://www.rentachook.com.au/). he makes chicken coops to encourage people to keep chickens because their an enviromentaly sustainable pet. not only is it as enviro friendly as possible, the guys really entertaining. minutes after emailing him i answerd the phone to hear a 'brgaark' hed called to clear up a few details and see if i had any chook questions or did i need help finding chooks to buy in my area. im realy glad i chose to buy from him because its such a positive buisiness that im happy to support
so, in a few weeks i will have some featherd friends. whats also exciting is that i wont need to be conned 10 times a day into lifting up little girls to see and feed the chickes over the fence! my back will be loving it and our bellies will be loving fresh organic eggs
